Below are some questions and points to consider when you are looking for computer software and/or doing technology planning.

This is by no means an exclusive list;

just information we felt might be useful.

 Timing:

 * What is your timeframe for making a decision about new software?

 * What is your target date for implementing your new software? You

may want to consider both a target date and a drop-dead date.

 Your Current/Future Software:

* If any, what software are you currently using?

* What features of your current software are important to you?

* What are the shortcomings of your current software?

* What are the frustrations of your current software?

* What are the most important needs for your organization in your

    new software?

* How important is it to you that your organization is able to influence

new features, new modules or general enhancements to your

software system after your initial purchase?

Goals:

* When all is "said and done" what do you want your new software to

do in terms of making your business more efficient and productive?

Staff:

* Have you designated a person to be in charge of your project and

service as the primary contact with vendors?

* Do you have a person, or people, on your staff who are

knowledgeable about computer systems and software?

* If you do not have an IT person on staff; do you think you need

one? or consider contracting for support?

* Identify other key people and their involvement in this project.

Budgets:

* Have you set a fiscal budget for this project?

* In addition for money; have you budgeted time for those staff

   member(s) involved in this project?

* Does your budget allow for any required hardware upgrades?

Hardware:

* Do you have a list of all your current computer hardware? With the

type of processor, memory, hard-drive space and operating

    system?

* Do you have a replacement plan that operates on a 3-4 year cycle?
